The Biogeochemical Interactions and Fluxes (BIF) Lab is training a new generation of ocean scientists and developing innovative tools to better observe, understand, and sustain our changing ocean.

We explore how the ocean breathes, transforms, and connects life through chemistry.

We study the invisible exchanges that drive Earth’s biogeochemical cycles, from the microbial reactions shaping oxygen-deficient zones to the large-scale processes that regulate carbon and nutrient fluxes.

Our research bridges ocean technology and biogeochemistry, combining autonomous sensors, BGC-Argo floats, and multi-platform observations with lab and modeling approaches. By decoding chemical signals in real time, we reveal how the ocean responds to climate-driven changes such as deoxygenation and marine heatwaves.
